SBDC Counseling and Classes

University of Wisconsin System - Small Business Development Center

Located in Downtown Milwaukee at 161 W. Wisconsin Avenue, the UW System Small Business Development Center (SBDC) offers free one-on-one counseling to business clients that are thinking about starting a business, those that are well along in their plans and those who are up and running and need a refresher course. The SBDC draws upon a large group of business professionals who specialize in marketing and sales, business planning, buying and selling a business, financial management, product development, accounting and bookkeeping, customer service and inventory control. The First Steps Workshop is designed for people that are thinking about starting a business, but do not know where to begin. This fast-paced three-hour session assesses entrepreneurs’ readiness to open a business and reveals the critical resources available to achieve business success. Fast Forward Grants

The State of Wisconsin's Wisconsin Fast Forward (WFF) grant program is a nationally recognized, innovative talent development solution driven by Wisconsin businesses to train and retain highly skilled workers. Over $20 million in WFF grant contracts has been issued to date, supporting more than 200 worker training projects and benefitting hundreds of employers and thousands of workers across Wisconsin. Grant funds support short-term and medium-term employer-led worker training projects that:
  • Encourage increased collaboration between Wisconsin businesses and workforce training partners
  • Fill current and ongoing skill requirements of Wisconsin employers
  • Place workers in long-term positions with opportunities for professional growth and economic advancement.
Wisconsin employers and workforce partners are encouraged to submit grant applications for innovative, collaborative and customized training projects in accordance with online Application Information and details found in each of the GPAs posted.

OED Educational Options

OED offers a variety of educational opportunities in partnership with our local Chambers of Commerce. In recent years, we have offered programs on conflict management, hiring techniques and tips, outboarding new staff and developing safety measures. Currently due to the COVID-19 situation, OED is not offering any in-person programs. We will be looking at offering additional on-line programs in the fall.
